India has become the fifth-largest economic power in the world

Bloomberg reported on Friday that India had surpassed the United Kingdom to become the world’s fifth largest economy.

India surpassed the United Kingdom to become the fifth-largest economy in the final three months of 2021, pushing the United Kingdom to sixth place for the second time after doing so in 2019.

According to the Bloomberg analysis, the Indian GDP was $854.7 billion in ‘nominal’ cash terms in the quarter to March, while the UK was $816 billion.

According to official figures, India’s GDP grew by 13.5% in the April-to-June period. It is projected to grow at about 7% this fiscal.

UK GDP grew just 1% in cash terms in the second quarter and, after adjusting for inflation, shrank 0.1%.

A decade ago, India ranked 11th among the largest economies – and the UK was 5th. India is now behind just the US, China, Japan, and Germany....
